Carnival Cruise Line guide: Everything to know about ships, itineraries and more

carnival cruise website

STEP 4 - ONBOARD EXPENSESCarnival operates a cashless system onboard - all guests must be added to an expense account for onboard services and purchases, even if they are not given charging privileges. Since the onboard currency is the US Dollar, all monetary transactions on your onboard account (i.e, billing, charges, disbursements, etc.) are managed in USD. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Carnival adds an automatic service gratuity of $16 to $18 per person, per day to final bills, depending on the cabin category (children under the age of 2 are exempt). If you are unhappy with the service you receive, you can adjust this amount at the Guest Services desk before disembarking.

Bring the Fun home!

On Carnival ships in Australia, smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas. A slightly more expensive "value" plan, at $19.55 per day when bought in advance, adds access to email and most websites. The quality of the food (and drink) on Carnival ships always surprises us, given the budget pricing of the brand. Despite being one of the industry's lowest-cost operators, Carnival manages to pull off one of the best steakhouses at sea in Fahrenheit 555, and even the no-extra-charge main restaurants get the basics right.

Also, an 18% gratuity is added to bar bills and the cover charge of the Chef's Table. In short, there's a ton to do up top on Carnival vessels — and it's almost all available to every passenger on board the vessels at no extra charge (the roller coaster is the only exception). It's a fun-at-sea focus that has gone to new levels over the past two years with the debut of Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, each of which has — get this — a roller coaster on the top deck.

Gotta see Port Canaveral (Orlando)?

The self-described "fun ship" line is the king of short, affordable, fun-focused cruises from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico and other nearby destinations. No matter where you live in the U.S., you're probably within a few hours of a Carnival ship. Later in the year, the name was revealed to be Carnival Jubilee.

More Fun's Coming Soon

For the most part, Carnival ships don't have quite as many features on board as Royal Caribbean or Norwegian vessels, in part because they're not as big. They're still packed with a variety of attractions, including multiple entertainment venues, casinos, spas and lots of deck-top fun zones such as water parks and ropes courses. Like other big-ship operators, Carnival packs a lot of dining options onto its vessels — some included in the price, some at an extra charge.

Carnival Panorama, another sister to Carnival Vista, entered service as the cruise line's flagship on December 11, 2019. She became the first new ship to homeport on the West Coast since Paradise (now Carnival Paradise) in 1998. All Carnival cruises go to great spots — what sets each ship apart is how it gets you there. Every one of our ships features its own unique twist on Carnival-style fun.

During the day, there is no specific dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you're bound for the top deck, that means looking like you're going to the beach — T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are just fine. In general, the production shows aren't nearly as sophisticated — or as long — as what you'll find on Royal Caribbean or Norwegian ships. Every Carnival ship has one big theater where you'll often find flashy, fast-paced production shows that string together a medley of loosely related tunes. Designed to be quick and digestible, they typically last around 30 minutes and have relatively small casts (just eight on some ships). The latter venue was created in partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri and serves a free lunch on embarkation and sea days, with all items smoked on board.

Most of these six ships (all but Carnival Venezia) have an a la carte barbecue-and-beer joint called Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, too. BlueIguana is a Chipotle-style restaurant, with yummy made-to-order burritos and tacos. Created in partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri, Guy's Burger Joint offers burgers that beat anything you'll find around the pool on other mass-market ships and even most luxury vessels. Every vessel has two main dining rooms and a casual buffet eatery where meals are included in the fare.

There was a time when Carnival operated some of the biggest cruise ships in the world. In addition, vessels offer extra-charge laundry and, on select ships, dry cleaning services. Carnival also offers dedicated tween and teen programs on ships for children aged 12 to 17. The younger children in this age range (12-14) are grouped into what's known as Circle C and have their own dedicated lounge on ships. It's a place to get together to talk, watch movies, play video games and take part in other activities.

Note that the Carnival fleet is scheduled to grow over the next year with two more new vessels. As noted above, the line has ordered another sister vessel to Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration that will be ready to sail in late 2023. In 1993, Carnival began to get rid of their older second-hand tonnage, and sold their first ship, Mardi Gras, after 21 years of service with the line. The Carnivale followed the same year, going to newly created Carnival subsidiary Fiesta Marina Cruises. Each of our ships is a unique experience — check the features and find out which ship is right for you.

For dinner in the main dining room, you must sign up for either Your Time dining (you go whenever you want) or Traditional Dining (you have a fixed table and time for dinner). That said, Carnival has seen the success that some of its competitors have had with a bigger range of upscale accommodations, and it's eyeing more suites for future vessels. The new Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration each have 180 suites — more than twice the number of Carnival's other recent ships. Each of the vessels in Carnival's recent Vista Class series, for instance, offers fewer than 75 suites. Each of the line's earlier Conquest Class ships has around 50 suites. The oldest Fantasy Class vessels have 28 suites and 26 junior suites.

This information should be reviewed thoroughly. Each adult traveler must accept for themselves and their minor children, but cannot accept for other adults. Any passengers that don't complete this section will need to visit the check-in desk during embarkation to accept these terms. To complete your online check-in, you must agree to the following cruise ticket contract. Most onboard activities such as shows and deck-top attractions are included in the fare.

Carnival Cruise Line announced a series of new features to its online booking tool for travel advisors, GoCCL Navigator. Arrival Appointment What time are you planning on arriving at the port terminal on embarkation day? Guests who arrive early will be asked to wait until their designated arrival window. Note that, in contrast to airline frequent flyer programs, cruise line loyalty programs do not require you to requalify for status every year.

Also, there are always several music venues where you'll find live performers in the afternoons and evenings, including — on some ships — the Atrium Bar and a secondary hub area called Ocean Plaza. There's almost always a piano bar that's home to lively singalongs. In addition, every ship has at least one — and usually several — extra-charge eateries. The two venues have flat fees of $49 and $24 per person, respectively.

Note that it is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport or other official proof of nationality. All this said, we recommend checking Carnival's website before sailing for the very latest on requirements. Unlike some lines, Carnival has resisted the trend of big-ship operators carving out whole sections of deck-top areas for the exclusive use of passengers staying in suites or willing to pay hefty access fees.

Taking Your First Cruise: Everything You Need to Know Complete Guide

what is cruise

Although recognized for its enormous mega-ships, Royal Caribbean’s fleet of 26 ships includes seven modest-sized ships for first-time cruisers who prefer to start small and work their way up. All their ships feature multiple dining options, some of which are included in the cruise fare while others require an additional charge. With just four ships, each holding fewer than 700 passengers, Azamara is one of the smallest players in the cruise business. But it has a loyal following of travelers who appreciate the upscale ambience of its vessels, the inclusive amenities it offers (including gratuities and alcoholic drinks) and its destination focus. Given TPG's origins as a points and miles website, we'd be remiss if we didn't remind you to maximize your credit card points while making purchases on ships. The way to do this is to tie a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases to your onboard account.

night

These will give you a taste of cruising with fewer passengers, and often to smaller, less-frequented ports. In conclusion, a cruise offers a world of excitement, relaxation, and exploration. It’s a vacation like no other, where you can create memories, discover new destinations, and indulge in luxurious amenities. So, set sail on the journey of a lifetime and let the magic of a cruise transport you to extraordinary places and unforgettable experiences. When you book a cruise, you can expect a range of activities and experiences.

Certain Cabin Locations Are Better For Seasickness Relief

You’ll need to send your items down to the laundry room to get them pressed. NightlightCruise cabins — especially interior rooms with no windows — can get extremely dark at night. Combine that with an unfamiliar space and you’ll no doubt be bumping into things if you need to get up to use the restroom in the middle of the night. After meeting with the check-in agent, you’re ready to head to the ship as long as the staff is ready to start boarding. If you arrive early, you might have to wait in the terminal until the ship is ready. From there, you’ll meet with an agent that will tie up any loose ends needed before boarding, such as a photo tied to your account.

Sail During the Summer/Spring Break for Younger Crowds

Cruise ships have a wide range of onboard features and there are cruise ship itineraries that cater for every corner of the globe. Every cruise ship will have packages that allow you to call or get web access, but they charge a high price (often around $15-25 per day). Know the Ins and Outs of Drink Packages Before BuyingAlcohol is big business on a cruise, and it’s not unusual to spend hundreds on it during the course of a sailing. To help you budget, cruise lines offer “all you can drink” packages. With these deals, you pay one set amount each day and then get to have (almost) whatever you want from the bar. One of the most confusing things for first-time cruise passengers is what’s included with your cruise fare.

If you’re traveling alone or want to meet people during your trip, check out our guide to making friends on a cruise. After completing your muster drill, you'll likely notice how hungry you are because of how long embarkation day is -- but so have others. This means throngs of hungry people make a mad dash to the cruise ship buffet. In some cases, though not many, when several passengers are delayed, a ship's departure might be postponed.

But Don’t Pick a Cruise for Just One Port of Call

Add to that the time it takes to get to the airport, through security, and to your gate before boarding begins. Every ship will have a Guest Services desk that is staffed 24 hours a day. They can help with any issue you have, or at least point you in the right direction. In general, cruise ships are no more crowded than a busy shopping center or restaurant. Gratuities on Every ServiceWe’ve discussed the daily gratuities that are charged to your account.

what is cruise

And last but not least, large numbers of tourists visiting a destination at one time can have adverse effects, with overtourism being a distinct problem around the world that often results from cruise tourism. The world's biggest cruise ships, such as the Oasis-class vessels operated by Royal Caribbean, often sail with more than 6,000 passengers apiece. And that's not including the 2,000 or so crew members that are aboard the biggest cruise vessels.

Must-Have Tips, Advice, and Info For First-Time Cruisers

Suite hosts are the key to fine tuning every aspect of a Seabourn cruise. Once onboard, guests can rely on their suite host for everything from dinner reservations in the ship’s restaurants to popcorn for a movie afternoon. The line caters to a broad spectrum of guests, with ample activities and attractions onboard that perfectly match the needs and desires of guests of all ages.

How Stable the Ships Are On the WaterWorried about seasickness? It impacts some people, but if you are thinking the ship will be rocking and rolling the entire time, think again. Most days you’ll likely not even notice you are on the water. In recent years technology — including passport scanners and facial recognition software — have made this faster at ports that have the latest devices. Even so, those sailing with a birth certificate or ports that still require manual checking of documents can take longer.

If you’re driving in, look for a hotel that offers a cruise parking special. As an incentive to attract guests, many hotels (especially in smaller port cities like Galveston) offer free parking if you stay a night with them. It’s an easy way to save a bundle, but only if you planned to stay the night anyway. It’s typically not worth it to stay just to get free parking. One nice thing about cruises is that many trips allow you to sail with only a birth certificate and photo ID (if they begin and end in the same port).

Walls on ships often are made with metal (even if they look like wood, thanks to faux wood veneers) and will hold a magnet. Some cruisers even bring magnets with hooks so they can hang up clothes and other items on their walls. Yes, you'll be able to find sunscreen, aspirin and Band-Aids on a cruise ship.

Yachts hold fewer passengers than other cruise vessels and usually a family or group of people will hire the entire yacht and cruise the seas. There are many places that are popular for the cruise tourism, such as hiring a yacht in Greece or a Whitsunday yacht charter in Australia. Fast forward to the 1980s and we started to see the development of cruise ships closer to what we recognise today.

While we're on the topic of sundries, don't forget extra batteries for your camera if you are bringing one. As the head of The Points Guy's cruise content team, I get these sorts of questions all the time. And Jack come home from a long cruise, with prize-money in his pockets, was as ostentatious as any nouveau riche. It’s unfair to decide how you feel about a cruise without trying one.

They boast a glass wall that opens from the top to create a balcony-like effect. Where should you start your search for the perfect cruise for you? Below, you'll find our quick guide to some of the most popular cruise brands. As you'll see, it's not meant to be an in-depth review of the lines. It's just a short overview — enough to give you a sense of which particular cruise operator might best appeal to you.

One of the big draws in the evening are the late-night game shows. Whether it’s the ship’s version of The Newlywed Game or a dance contest, these shows ask for participation from the audience. We like them because they turn out to be the funniest things on the ship.

Follow that with the sauna to detox your system as your sweat glands and heart work to purify your body. Finish with a dip in the hot tub to improve your circulation and loosen any stiff muscles. The Garden Villas are the creme de la creme, with their own hot tubs, private roof terraces, and even cool features like pianos and bars.

The shows change from time to time, but they are always top notch. As a bonus, they are also free to attend and one of the most popular things to do on the ship. Best Things to Do in Cozumel on a Cruise Day in Port

cozumel cruise port map

Make this your next destination for one of the best Cozumel beaches near the cruise port. Located only one-tenth of a mile from the ship, this will be our first stop at a private hotel beach. While all beaches in Cozumel (and in Mexico writ large) are free and open to the public, amenities at these locations come with a fee. The costs will be called an admission fee or day pass, or an “expectation” for patrons to order food and/or drinks at adjoining hotels and/or restaurants.

cozumel cruise port map

Local Transportation

Palancar Reef is one of the most beautiful dive sites in all of Cozumel. When visiting Cozumel, taking a picture by the Cozumel sign is a simple yet great way to remember your trip. If you’re cruising, you might even find a ‘Cozumel’ sign at the port with your cruise ship in the background. The Money Bar Beach Club is within easy driving distance of Cozumel’s ports. The shore is a little rocky, so using the steps is necessary to reach the water. If you’re a food enthusiast, exploring the rich flavors of Cozumel is an essential aspect of your trip.

Cozumel – Mexico

Playa San Martin is a free, quiet beach situated on Cozumel’s eastern coast. It’s important to note that the beach has rough waters, so it’s not recommended to swim here. The park has a white lighthouse that offers a panoramic view when you climb to the top.

Local cuisine, quick bites and restaurants

Cozumel is a perfect destination for those looking for beaches, shopping, scuba diving and snorkelling. But for those interested in history instead of beaches you are at the right spot as well! The island has a number of Mayan ruines like San Gervasi and you could even visit the famous Chichen Itza when your ship is in port in Cozumel. Upon exiting the cruise terminal, you’ll spot a long street filled with shopping malls, souvenir stores, cafes, restaurants, and several historic landmarks. For our most recent trip to Cozumel, we decided to book a day pass at a beach club on our own.

Amenities Within Walking Distance of Cozumel’s Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal and Piers

You can choose to book an official shore excursion or do something on your own. In some cases, you may need to take a tender boat to the port, but that is uncommon. Most ships visiting Cozumel will dock at one of the three ports.

Bonus Cozumel Beach

On the east side of the island, tourists come for the bars and restaurants, narrow beaches, and gorgeous views of the rugged eastern coastline. Most people gravitate towards the west side of Cozumel because of San Miguel, the many beach clubs, and all the three cruise ports along the coast. Book a ferry ride from the terminal for a 15-minute trip to this exclusive destination.

This is the only drawback to cruising with Royal Caribbean and brands. Though nearly a 3,000 year-old civilization, Cozumel was a commercial and ceremonial center during the classic Mayan period about 250 to 900 A.D. During this time the Mayans created many of its sacred archeological sites dotted across the island. Visit the tropical gardens; relax in a hammock; join an ancient healing steam bath ceremony called a temazcal; or, have a massage in the natural spa.

Beach Clubs In Cozumel

cozumel cruise port map

The museum also features a restaurant, so if you get hungry, you can grab a quick lunch at the cafeteria and resume exploring. The entrance charge for the museum is roughly $8 and you can opt to get a tour of the area or not. If you get thirsty head over to Avenida 25 you will come across el Mercado, the largest fruit and groceries market in the port. Enjoy some of their freshly squeezed orange juice and other fruit juices. You should be well-prepared for a trip to Cozumel as long as you bring lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and some extra cash.

Although most shops accept US dollars, it’s recommended to have some Mexican pesos on hand, especially in more local or non-touristy areas. The only walkable area of Cozumel is San Miguel, which is where most of the island’s shopping, eating, and activities are located. The Cozumel Island loop road is 40 miles around and circles the entire southern part of the island. However, do keep in mind that the northern section of the island remains inaccessible by car. There are a few larger and more intriguing Mayan sites near Cozumel, though they require a ferry ride to the mainland and will take up a day for the excursion. While there are shore-based snorkeling spots, the majority of the beautiful sites require a boat journey.

Some of the best things to do at the park include strolling in the gardens, watching sea lions and crocodiles, and swimming with dolphins or manatees. Don’t forget to try the tequila tasting and enjoy the swimming pools. In addition to Mexican cuisine, this family-run restaurant offers a nice range of beverages, including margaritas and cocktails. Colores y Sabores is a restaurant where you can enjoy a wide variety of Mexican dishes. Popular choices on the menu often include stuffed peppers, freshly made tortillas, and delicious guacamole. Puerta Maya is the furthest port in Cozumel, located around 3 miles (5 km) away from San Miguel, right next to the International Cruise Terminal.

Visitors can enjoy loungers and umbrellas for the price of ordering food and drinks at this beachside establishment. While not a “beach” at all in the traditional sense, this is THE place to go snorkeling and scuba diving – on a budget. And, in the adjoining shop you will find all the rental gear and training you will need to get out in the water.

After disembarkation, passengers walk through a shopping plaza with various shops, restaurants, bars. The good news is that there are still small pockets of nice beaches near the cruise ships on the west side of the island, including many in walking distance. Typically, the closest beaches to the cruise ports are going to require a fee to access. In this section, we will cover the best beaches near the Cozumel cruise port, the top landmarks to explore and the best restaurants and bars to try. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Cozumel has something for everyone on a cruise stop.

The third Cozumel cruise ship pier was built by Carnival Corporation and serves exclusively its brand companies' vessels. Puerta Maya is located 0,5 mi (0,8 km) south of The International Pier. The terminal (aka Little Cozumel) has the most modern and diverse facilities. Port Cozumel cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month.

As you disembark from the cruise ship, you’ll find rental car companies conveniently located near the port. You will find quite a few vehicle options to match your preferences and group size. Rates are reasonable and there’s also an option for comprehensive insurance coverage so you can set off with peace of mind.

If you want truly spectacular Mayan ruins you can still see them during your cruise to Cozumel, but since they are on the main land of Mexico it will be an all-day event which will require a ferry ride. Chichen Itza (recently named one of the 7 wonders of the world) and Tulum are the main Mayan sites you can see. Many cruisers love to take the 45-minute ferry from Cozumel to Play Del Carmen to check out some great resorts and beaches. There are over 100,000 people living at this municipality which is just off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. The largest city is San Miguel which is right near the cruise ports on the west end of the island. From the pristine coral reefs and endless beaches to the plentiful shopping in town, Cozumel has something for everyone.

International Cruise Terminal has two berths and is mostly used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise lines. It has a large terminal area featuring various shops, tour operator stands, bars, restaurants, among which Margaritaville, located right in front of your ship, is the most popular one. It’s usually packed with people dancing salsa and having shots of tequila, eating tasty food, and enjoying the lively restaurant’s atmosphere.
