Welcome to the Tree House, the Chicago shelter where every cat thrives Medill Reports Chicago

tree house chicago photos

The set up is super cute and it's relatively quieter than most places in River North. In keeping with the general Italian theme of the food on Tree House’s menu, there’s rigatoni in house-made vodka sauce, truffle spaghetti, orecchiette with spicy sausage and ravioli with mushroom and fig balsamic. For the sisters, Tree House represents a fresh start from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chicago’s restaurant industry continues to struggle under economic challenges brought on by the virus, leading to sweeping closures across the city. There’s room to seat 100 between two dining rooms at high- and low-top tables and booths for six, along with a DJ booth planted along the east wall of the restaurant. Owners hope to soon offer outdoor dining as well, as they’re in the process of locking down licenses for an outdoor patio that will seat 32.

Menu

So much cuteness by way of decorum and a massive long bar. We sat outside on the patio which was lovely for a Tuesday evening (Aug 9). I just had an old Fashioned as I had joined my hubby later in the evening. He had a beer and a wedge salad with a side of meatballs. Staff is also very helpfull and attentive. It's a very big sportsbar.

We are very lucky to have the resources to care for those cats,” Moore said. Tree House operates several programs tailored to homeless cats’ needs. The Veterinary Wellness Center, which opened to the public in 2021, offers spay/neuter surgery for both cats and dogs as well as preventive wellness care at affordable prices.

Tree House strikes a balance between a nostalgic, family-oriented restaurant, and a bar with nightlife. My daughter and her friends purchased $80 each tickets from a third-party approved organizer for tonight's St. Patrick's Day's events to go to this... The Neapolitan pizzas include such favorites as the classic Margherita (buffalo mozzarella, basil, San Marzano tomato sauce), the spectacular salumi dolce e piccante (spicy pepperoni, fior de latte, tomatoes, and honey), and a mushroom and truffle blend. The owners of Old Crow Smokehouse have reopened their prominent River North restaurant space swapping barbecue for pizza. Norman ⁤Chapman, ‍a name that ⁤may not ring⁤ a bell‍ to many, but to those who⁢ are well-versed in the world of percussion, he is a ⁣legend.

We hope that the photos of Chicago’s unique tree houses have sparked your imagination and filled you with wonder. Whether you’re a nature lover, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone who finds joy in the unexpected, there’s something truly captivating about these homes nestled high up in the trees. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll find yourself visiting these tree houses in person and experiencing their magic firsthand. Until then, let your imagination run wild as you dream of a world where homes grow amongst the branches.

At Tree House, the small plates section of the menu offers portions suitable for starters or just things to nibble while enjoying a cocktail or glass of wine. Chef Marco Colin, who has previously worked in the kitchens at Chicago’s internationally acclaimed Alinea and The Publican, is aiming to serve elevated comfort food. His kitchen uses a traditional oven as well as a wood-burning brick oven to prepare Tree Houses various styles of pizza. The cocktail offerings – with beverages designed to pair with Colin’s menu – prove a formidable support to the restaurant space, which as the evening draws on, transitions from an intimate dinner spot to a club vibe with bottle service and live entertainment. Experiment with different angles and perspectives to showcase the unique architecture and intricate details of the tree houses.

Tree House’s newest facility, built in 2017, has a cat-centered design with heated floors and “catios.” Each cat colony has room to roam freely as visitors walk through. “Every day is just so full of tiny, magical moments that just make you so happy to be a part of Tree House and animal welfare,” said manager and veterinary technician Courtney Moore. She had worked as a veterinary technician for 10 years before coming in 2021 to Tree House, where she now runs between 30 to 35 surgeries a day. Two other successful programs focusing on outdoor cats include its Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) and Cats at Work (CAW) programs. The latter brings feral cats to businesses for rodent control. Both programs aim to provide safe, long-term living arrangements for cats who thrive better outside.

Ottenfeld explained Tree House’s process for taking in new cats. One of our biggest is transfers from other shelters that operate on an open-admission model. We have a transfer team, and we have partnerships with a couple shelters, mostly in Illinois, and our team will go and see how many cats we can intake,” Ottenfeld said.

The Pizza Bar is the centerpiece of the Tree House menu, and it’s divided into wood fired Neapolitan and Detroit styles. My friends and I were able to sit in their spacious booths and enjoy the fun music, aesthetic decor, and great drinks. Our waitress Jess was super attentive and always made sure we had everything we needed. She made our experience there a memorable one, can’t wait to go back. Any clubby endeavor calls for cocktails, as the Sanchez’s well know.

Tree House operates on a capacity-to-care model, meaning the shelter takes in the number of cats that resources and staffing can accommodate. While differing from other shelters, it allows them to prioritize strays and high-risk cats, such as those who are injured or carrying diseases. They currently have around 25 cats available for adoption. In 2022, Tree House helped 1,100 cats and conducted 4,700 spay/neuter surgeries, the society’s records show.

Visitors will also see numerous murals and plaques honoring the individuals and cat lovers who continue to support them. The majority of the organization’s funding comes from donations and grants. Tree House (149 W Kinzie St.), is a bar and restaurant slated to open in the coming weeks in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. The honey chicken wings and the frozen kiwi cocktail is the bomb. I didn't try the food here but the atmosphere was super fun!

Patrons can also count on a 60-foot bar in front and another 25-foot bar in back.

Harper Fowlkes House Savannah History & Visitor Guide

harper fowlkes house

War interfered with its construction, however, and it was not completed until 1868, by which time Mercer had sold it to John Wilder. Tours discuss the home’s architecture, artworks and antiques and Harper’s own preservation work. Amongst Savannah’s most popular historic houses is the Green-Meldrim House, on the west side of Madison Square. From this house, General William Sherman wrote his historic telegram presenting the City of Savannah to President Lincoln as a “Christmas present.” It is currently owned by the adjacent St John’s Episcopal Church. The Historic Savannah Foundation saved the house from destruction in the mid 20th century.

I purchased the Savannah tour pass for 3 days, I did not use them consecutively, as I was on town for 8 days. I chose to do the Hop on Hop off Tour on my first day to give me an overview of Savannah, I rode the trolleys for a total of two loops, guide offered a different perspective on the city. I took a walking tour, Brad was awesome, 1.5 hrs of wonderful history. I rode the Paddle boat, was a bit disappointed the wheel doesn't function.

For nearly sixty years, Samuel and Harriet Freeman lived in the home. In 1986, at the time of Harriet’s death, the home was donated to the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Architecture who stewarded the property until its sale in 2022. As part of a condition of the sale, the property is now under a conservation easement with the Los Angeles Conservancy. In February of that year, the Freeman House was sold to a new private owner with the easement in place. Let's begin with a home most known for the best-selling novel that spilled it all (also now being brought to Broadway) - the Mercer-Williams House. Tour the home of Savannah's antique dealer, preservationist and socialite Jim Williams, known for his savoir faire, elaborate parties and the accused slaying of his lover, Danny Hansford.

Moon Fire Temple is a sacred garden temple located in the Santa Monica Mountains with a 360 degree panoramic view overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Malibu and the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Hamilton-Turner Inn was built in 1873 for businessman Samuel Pugh Hamilton near Lafayette Square. In 1915, it was sold to Dr. Francis Turner and in the 1960s it was saved from demolition.

The third story, unlike the first and second, featured Empire details. It was likewise capped with a mansard roof, which increased the property by $6,000. Some historic homes are managed independently while others are handled by the Historic Savannah Foundation.

Other highlights include gilded mirrors, an ornate ironwork window bench, an antique gentleman’s chest and the three-story oval rotunda capped by a skylight. The Harper Fowlkes House is a beautifully furnished Greek Revival Mansion with a stunning garden and fascinating story. As part of the John Lautner one hundredth birthday celebrations, the Lautner Foundation and the MAK Center opened up four of Lautner's houses for a tour this past weekend. Yesterday we visited the Sheats-Goldstein House and today we head east to the Harpel House in the Hollywood Hills. Architecture and ghost tours are offered daily, lasting sixty minutes, and vary based on the tour type. The Sorrel-Weed House is located at 6 W Harris Street, north of Madison Square.

Alida bequeathed the Harper Fowlkes House to the Georgia Branch of the Society of the Cincinnati upon her death, desiring that others delight in the esteemed dwelling. After all, the Harper Fowlkes House had captured her attention since girlhood. Alida grew on to live through the Great Depression, First and Second World War, and the Vietnam War.

I also visited Fort Pulaski on my last day in Savannah, it was a wonderful experience. I also used multiple options from the normal options, my 2 favorites were the Square Pops and the Jepsen Art Center. I cannot express how awesome it was to be able to enter a venue, have it paid for, and just enjoy. I will purchase the Savannah Pass when I return next year, it was well worth it's value.

Due to Richardson's financial loss and the yellow fever pandemic, the home was leased to Mary Maxwell as a boarding house in 1824. Lawyer and enslaver George Welshman Owens eventually owned the home in 1830. The home stayed in the Owens family for 121 years until it was offered to the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences by Owens's granddaughter Margaret Gray Thomas.

TourPass promptly refunded this amount on my credit card. The featured Trolley Tour was outstanding, as were standard tours The Oldest Store and Jail. If I ever get to Savanah or Charleston will definitely go with TourPass.

In 1953, the home was purchased by the GSA to operate as a museum. In 1955, the home was nearly demolished to make room for a parking lot. The gardens have been partially restored to feature the plants of coastal Georgia that would have existed during the Davenports’ time. They operate tours on Monday and Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $6 for students, and free for those under 12.

In 1995, it was acquired by the Ships of the Sea Museum and completely restored, including the portico and garden. Today the museum has pieces like models of the Wanderer and Titanic as well as maritime antiques. The 45-minute tours visit the carriage house, slave quarters, and cellar. The Owens-Thomas House is located at 124 Abercorn Street, on Oglethorpe Square.

It’s most well known for being where the Marquis de Lafayette gave a speech to the locals during his stay. The Green Meldrim House was built in the 1850s in the Gothic Revival style for English cotton merchant Charles Green. In 1864, Mr. Green invited General Sherman to use the home as Union headquarters during the occupation of Savannah during the Civil War. Tours are offered on Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 12 to 4 pm. Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, AAA and AARP members, and Girl Scouts, and free for active military. The Andrew Low House is located at 329 Abercorn Street, around the corner from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

At that time many of the interior fittings and finishes were removed and placed in storage. Due to the significant cost of rehabilitation and desire to see it transferred into private ownership with safeguards, USC chose to sell the building in 2022. The Olde Pink House is one of the most well-known restaurants in Savannah, set in a Colonial mansion. It was built in 1771 as the Habersham House for James Habersham Jr., who lived here until 1800. It later operated as a bank and then Union headquarters during the Civil War.

“For the client who is looking for a more neutral wedding, I would love to see an all baby’s breath wedding! I envision a baby’s breath arch at the alter with a ton of clear candles decorated down the aisle. Other home tours in Savannah and nearby include the winter Holiday Tour of Homes and Inns, and prior to the pandemic the Tybee Island Tour of Homes and the St Vincent’s Academy Fall Tour of Homes.

Once serving as their headquarters, it opened as a museum in 1963. The house is restored to its appearance in the 1820s; the gardens have also been redeveloped. Alida Harper purchased the home in 1939 at an auction to settle the previous owner’s estate. Ms. Harper-Fowlkes furnished the residence with valuable antiques, period pieces and other collectibles.

Rumors of the homes many skeletons from the past aren't shy about telling their own stories. Visitors are welcome to hear the accounts from the "spirit's" mouths through architecture, paranormal or ghost tours. The Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters is a testament to the life of the fortunate and enslaved. The home was initially owned by enslaver and shipping merchant Richard Richardson. It was designed and constructed in 1819 by English architect William Jay with the help of both freed and enslaved men.

Her contributions to Savannah throughout her lifetime were invaluable. The Georgian Tea Room was Alida’s first foray into architectural conservation. It was likewise imperative to her participation in the restoration movement. In Alida’s efforts, she had attended the Society for the Preservation of Savannah’s Landmarks, which had been organized to protect the Pink House. The meeting, Alida claimed, “was the birth of interest in old things.” For her, “preservation and restoration [had] never been a dead issue” since.

Wright’s design was completed in 1925 and shortly thereafter in 1926 the Freeman’s began to undertake a series of interior alterations which reflected their personal tastes rather than Wrights. The owners commissioned notable modernist architect and Wright protégé Rudolf Schindler to design and supervise the work. The Freeman’s developed a close personal relationship with Schindler, who served as the family architect until his death in 1953.

An encounter awaits you at the Sorrel Weed House & Carriage House. Architect Charles Clusky designed the home between 1830 and 1845 for a wealthy French Haitian merchant, Francis Sorrel. The home was built to host the prominent and elite and to accommodate the Sorrel Family's lavish lifestyle.

In the majority of these houses, guided tours only are available, though the gardens (where applicable) can be toured at your own pace. Allow about an hour or so for your visit to any of the homes. Located in the Hollywood Hills, the Freeman House is the smallest of four Southern California textile block residences designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built during the 1920s.

In 1969, Williams bought the house, restoring the property and redesigning the interiors according to his own tastes and interests. This house is the former residence of Flannery O’Connor, one of the South’s most celebrated authors. We think that you’re going to take delight in this nineteenth-century dwelling. With an abundance of artifacts and antiques, the Harper Fowlkes House is an eye-catching estate.

The Harper-Fowlkes House is the last remaining of the large homes that once graced the formerly-fashionable Orleans Square, its imposing double-story columns a hint of the square’s lost grandeur. Initially, I had some amount of distrust ordering on line. Mathematically pre calculated if TourPass could offer savings compared to purchasing admission tickets individually. To get the most out of our day, I planned an aggressive itinerary. We even brought sandwiches for lunch, so as not to waste a minute. We were able to get in 6 standard tours and one featured!

Now I am hopeful the Charleston, SC Pass, that it is just as terrific, as I am visiting in the Fall. It's expected when visiting Savannah to stroll along many elaborate homes. For a time, bigger meant wealthier, and the prior owners weren't shy about showing off their assets. Thankfully preserving beauty and architecture has been equally important to our city, allowing locals and visitors to step across the historic thresholds of these contemporary house museums. This inventive, central-hall house is a magnificent example of a trust-lot mansion. It was erected for Aaron Champion, a banker from Massachusetts, by Hermitage Plantation owner Henry McAlpin, whose son married Champion’s daughter and thus inherited the house.

They did a great job of covering St Augustine’s highlights. Their app was user friendly and showed proximity of nearby attractions, saving steps and time. The house was originally built in 1896 for the white woodmill owner WW Aimar, constructed in the delightful ‘gingerbread’ style then popular. The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is both a museum of the Girl Scouts organization and a historic home.

It is also significant as one of the first major successes of the historic preservation movement in Savannah. The Andrew Low House also has one of the few surviving original gardens created in 19th-century Savannah. The design of the gardens dates from the mid century, shortly after the completion of the house. In her will, Alida left the house to the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia to be used as state headquarters. She wanted future generations to see the lifestyle of the mid 1800s.

Crime is when your lawyers tell the Senate not to convict you in an impeachment trial because you can be charged in court. Corruption is when your lawyers inform the Supreme Court that you are immune from criminal courts and only the Senate can judge you — but, alas, the senators have missed their window. Crime is when you launch a violent attempt to overthrow the republic. Corruption is when you convince an entire political party to pretend they didn’t watch it live on television, or cower from it inside the Capitol while dozens of police officers were being bludgeoned by the mob. The latter is the most interesting part of the space, since most of the artists who stopped by played other sets. It was a way to get closer to artists such as the War & Treaty, Maddie & Tae and Brittney Spencer.

Richard Nixon, a self-made, and self-corrupted, man who studied geopolitics and government assiduously, never achieved such a broad subjugation of American values and institutions. Trump, the ignorant, n’er-do-well heir to his father’s crooked fortune, has achieved so much more. Trump hasn’t just captured the trenches of conservative America, he has taken the commanding heights. He owns all of it, from the most racist backwater saloon to the Federalist Society clubhouse. If he can somehow get through the next few perilous months, he may yet render corruption sacred, and the republic irredeemable.

Just a few stairs above DawgHouse Saloon is our cannabis bar & lounge. Experience food and drinks like never before with infused sauces, oils and cocktails. We have the stuff to consume on site and purchase to take home with you, too. Of course, you’ve got to consider one of the “Dawgs,” with options like the Aloha Dawg (pineapple relish), and the Chihuahua (pico de gallo and avocado crema).

People who are searching for a Nashville private party space to host their next event will be completely satisfied by booking our Nashville event hall. Now, Stagecoach has started attracting an increasing number of brands for events outside the gates of the Empire Polo Club. Early Sunday afternoon, cowboys cooled off in plunge tubs, festival-goers lounged around the pool and a brave few took a mechanical bull for a spin in the backyard of a private estate in Bermuda Dunes, a few miles away from the festival grounds. The Times’ Mikael Wood and Vanessa Franko were there for that and much of what preceded it (and they have the windblown hair to prove it).

Here’s a rundown of the highlights and lowlights of Day 3. Other Stagecoach-adjacent events during the weekend included Friday night’s Midnight Cowboy after-party with luxury tequila Patrón El Alto and Saturday night’s Route 42 festival sponsored in part by competing luxury tequila Don Julio 1942. It seeps into the muscle and sinew of democratic society and institutions; it devours from within. The Supreme Court, drunk on arrogated power, cut loose from rudimentary ethics, has been eaten alive by it. But the court is just one plot of a vast terrain that Trump has conquered — not with crime, but corruption.

The event was the Recovery Rodeo, put on by cold-plunge tub company Plunge, craft nonalcoholic brewery Best Day Brewing, clothing outfitter Seager and portable speaker maker Turtlebox. From Jelly Roll’s big night and Eric Church’s somber set to Dwight Yoakam’s flying fringe, these are the biggest moments from Day 1 of Stagecoach 2024. It’s hard to believe that Stagecoach, which has booked pretty much every major country act this side of Dolly Parton since its inception in 2007, hadn’t welcomed Clint Black on its stages until this year. The thing I love most about Stagecoach is that you’re pretty much guaranteed to get a set at the Palomino Stage with songs embedded into our collective DNA.

Cathouse: The Series Where to Watch and Stream

the catfish house

For 12 years, the MTV reality series “Catfish” has traveled the U.S., presenting hundreds of intimate snapshots of what can go wrong when the heart mixes with technology. Laura Newberry is a former reporter with the lifestyle section at the Los Angeles Times. She wrote Group Therapy, a weekly newsletter that answers readers’ questions about mental health.

The idea really entered the public consciousness in early 2013, when Deadspin reported on a scandal surrounding the Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o. He led his team to the national championship game and was a Heisman Trophy finalist, all in the shadow of the death of his girlfriend early in the season. But the girlfriend, Deadspin discovered, was never real. IF IT WASN’T FOR NEV SCHULMAN, we’d still think of catfish as whiskered inhabitants of fresh water and not as online impostors. In the very first episode, Sunny, a 21-year-old Arkansas nursing student, wanted help meeting Jamison. As the series returns for its ninth season on April 30, it will continue to present snapshots of the country rarely seen on TV.

“Just be yourself, be honest, say whatever it is you feel comfortable saying,” Schulman told him. Jose said he’d created the fake account more than a decade earlier. Danny was shaken but maintained his composure. He fell in love with a woman he’d met online.

She previously worked on The Times’ education team and was a staff reporter at both the Reading Eagle in Eastern Pennsylvania and MassLive in Western Massachusetts. She graduated from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and also has a master’s degree in social work from the University of Central Florida. With the coronavirus pandemic ongoing, Catfish has adopted a socially distant-production model during which all of the investigating and filming is done virtually. This means that Nev Schulman has been filming his portions of the show from his home, where he is quarantining with his wife Laura Perlongo and their kids Cleo and Beau.

Smith said Winek was a beloved figure in Inland Empire sports, having coached baseball for many years at area high schools, including Corona and Arlington. Andis and a spokesperson for the Virginia State Police said none of Edwards’ prior employers had disclosed issues. NBA Twitter felt duped by the story of Vivian Flores’ disappearance, resuscitating the controversy of catfishing. Riverside police detectives determined that Edwards had met the teen online and misrepresented who he was, Railsback said.

(She did have two daughters, Abby and Megan, but neither was involved in the lie.) Wesselman-Pierce was the painter all along. She’d also created an entire network of fake Facebook accounts that interacted with one another to form a fleshed-out illusion. This all played out in the documentary “Catfish” (directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, Nev’s older brother), which “caused some hyperventilation” when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. As the story goes, Schulman, then a 24-year-old New York-based photographer, had been befriended on Facebook by Abby, an 8-year-old Michigan girl. When Megan’s story started to crumble, Schulman traveled to Michigan to find the truth, with a documentary team in tow.

By the time the codfish reached China, the flesh was mush and tasteless. So this guy came up with the idea that if you put these cods in these big vats, put some catfish in with them and the catfish will keep the cod agile. And there are those people who are catfish in life.

If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation. The show doesn't create drama or ignite controversy for sensationalism, but it does devote a lot of time to drawing out the emotions of its participants, so it's not always comfortable to watch. Sometimes the initial meetings are joyful confirmation of the two parties' deep affection; in other cases the outcomes aren't so happy, thanks to someone's dishonesty and the victim's sense of betrayal. It's impossible to watch these emotional confrontations and not feel for the one who's been duped, but the instigators' honesty about their motivations is a telling glimpse into the prevalence of this issue. When Schulman, Joseph, Danny and the crew arrived, they were met by a sobbing Jose.

When he saw her photo, he called it love at first sight. As explained in 2014 reports on Hollywood.com[16] and Vulture,[17] it is usually the catfish who makes the first contact with MTV. Producers then proceed to gather information about the deception from the catfish and contact the hopeful afterwards. For legal reasons, everyone involved in the series signs a contract agreeing to appear on camera before the episode enters production. In Season 3's Miranda and Camryn episode, the catfish changed their mind about meeting the hopeful, and appeared only by Skype.

Whether or not two people are totally lying to each other and it turns out to be a huge disaster, that's only the first part of the story. Make your Mother’s Day reservations for Sunday, May 12 and give mom the day she deserves - with the people and seafood she loves the most.

Presenting people objectively and compassionately is the show’s “secret X factor,” Schulman said, and a reason it continues to be a mainstay on MTV. The show takes special care in giving both parties a chance to tell their stories, leaving viewers to draw their own conclusions, to feel sympathy or not. Naya Tuiasosopo, as she is now known after coming out as a transgender woman, had used photos of a woman named Diane O’Meara to create Te’o’s fake girlfriend, Lennay Kekua. Te’o said he was the target of “someone’s sick joke and constant lies,” and called the situation “painful and humiliating.” In a news conference, Notre Dame’s athletic director mentioned the show “Catfish” by name. The term exploded on Twitter and Google searches soared.

Previous investigations have taken viewers to Kodiak, Alaska; St. Ignace, Mich.; Charlotte, Texas; and Greensburg, Pa. — places where career or social opportunities may be scarce. Before joining the newsroom in 2022, she covered criminal justice issues at the Orlando Sentinel and the Advocate in Baton Rouge. Ron Smith told the Press-Enterprise that Mark Winek was a close friend, and the deaths came as a shock.

And the [catfish] doesn't know that we're actually doing it. The feelings are real, the relationships are real. We haven't created any scenarios, we don't tell people what to say or do.

Investigators have determined that the outdoor disturbance involved a teenager who lived in the house, Railsback said. The man she was with — Austin Lee Edwards, 28, a law enforcement officer from North Chesterfield, Va. — was identified as the main suspect in the three deaths, he said. Edwards was tracked Friday evening to San Bernardino County, where he was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies in Kelso after firing a gun at officers, law enforcement officials said.

“It’s really tough to see people just so desperate for connection and not being able to have it manifest in reality,” Mosley, an avid watcher of “Catfish,” said during a video interview. “We have to renegotiate our relationship with technology,” he wrote. “CATFISH” HAS ENDURED in part because it’s maintained a commitment to conveying a starker reality than the Bravo-fied version of reality TV that’s dominant today — one filled with beautiful, wealthy people thriving in bustling cities. After filming, Frank showed Longwell a photo of the hub from which the catfish ring worked. (The show did not disclose the country in which Frank lived.) There were “a thousand cellphones on the table, all plugged into different power outlets,” each phone logged into a different account, Longwell, who is now 41, told me in a video interview. The hopefuls usually suspect they are being deceived but can’t quite surrender their rose-colored glasses.

The term "catfish" originated as the title of a 2010 documentary in which filmmaker Schulman discovers that the woman with whom he'd been having an online relationship had not been honest in describing herself. All dinners are served with one serving of white beans, hush puppies, coleslaw, and your choice of side. Today, those who have never watched a minute of “Catfish” most likely recognize the term, as the phenomenon has become more familiar than the documentary and TV show that minted it. The activities and behaviors that “Catfish” captures — wrestling with loneliness, seeking virtual relationships, sifting through digital misinformation and wondering what, if any of it, is real — are part and parcel of everyday life for many in 2024.

They have almost never had a video call with their person, and often they have never spoken on the phone. Professions of love and longing, within perpetual scrolls of direct messages or texts, are frequent. The exchange of private details and photographs, including explicit selfies, is common. Mosley’s study found that people who were highly anxious and avoidant, what Mosley called “a fearful type of attachment,” were more likely to be catfished or be catfish themselves.

Friends and family of the three who died gathered over the weekend to remember their loved ones, according to the Press-Enterprise. Edwards resigned from the Virginia State Police on Oct. 28, according to Geller, and started with the sheriff’s office about three weeks later. Mark, Sharie and Brooke Winek lived in the home with Brooke’s two teen daughters.

Avoidant people tend to conflate intimacy with lost independence and suffocation. The saga of Danny and Jose, which aired in 2017, is emblematic of the deception, dashed hopes and complicated situations regularly featured on the show. When the red flags started to pile up, Danny contacted “Catfish,” on MTV, for help. Sheri Lazzarini told the Press-Enterprise that she met Winek in 1994, when he asked to join her softball coaching staff at La Sierra High School in Riverside, while his daughters were attending.

Mosley’s study looked at this phenomenon by examining aspects of anxious and avoidant attachment styles, which reveal themselves in romantic or emotionally intimate situations. Anxiously attached people can become frenetically preoccupied with their ability to have and keep love.

Neighbors described a horrifying scene as a man who police say catfished a teenage girl arrived at her family’s home in Riverside on Friday, killing three relatives, and then leaving with her and the home on fire. A lot of the stories that we get come from the catfish side of things. People who feel so terrible [...] that they've been lying to a friend or a lover on the internet for a long time. They want to come clean, but they fear if they simply told the truth, the other person would [...] be very upset that they've been lied to and deceived, and likely discard them. And so they're hopeful that by coming on the show [...] maybe we can facilitate some kind of amicable exchange, that they can be heard, explain themselves in a more objective and non-judgmental way. So [the producers] orchestrate very delicately, and staying out of it as much as possible, a scenario by which [...] the hopeful reaches out to me [...]. [The hopeful has] no idea of course that the other person's already expressed interest in meeting.

“Mark, Sharie and Brooke were loving people who didn’t deserve this tragedy,” the Winek family wrote in a public statement Monday.
